How we score Europe eSIMs

The rating is an editorial judgement built on published plan information. It is not a lab test and it is not a record of anyone's personal use.

The six criteria

CriterionWhat a high score means
Price per dayLow listed price once the plan price is divided by its days, for the trip length where the plan is meant to be used
Daily full-speed dataA larger daily allowance, or a clearly stated fair use policy
Country coverageMore countries on the list, including non-EU destinations such as the UK, Switzerland and Turkey
Payment and privacyMore payment methods and no document check at purchase
Hotspot rulesA clearly stated, generous hotspot or tethering policy
Activation and top-upsA long window to activate after purchase, in-app top-ups and a refund policy for plans that cannot be used

Where the data comes from

Plan details come from provider apps and sites, listing aggregators such as eSIMDB, and a published third-party review for Holafly. Where a detail such as payment methods or the hotspot rule could not be found, the score for that criterion is conservative and the provider card says what is missing. Every figure is dated, and claims about a provider are phrased as that provider's own listing.

How a total is formed

Each criterion is scored from 0 to 10 and the six scores are averaged with equal weight. Equal weights are a choice. A traveller who streams all day may care about one criterion more than the other five, which is why the rating page shows every score separately.

What the scores are not

They are not a guarantee of speed, coverage or support in a given city. They do not replace checking the plan page before you pay.

Limits and corrections

Prices and plan terms change. Where we cannot source a detail, we say so instead of guessing. If you spot an outdated figure, write to the address on the contact page. The disclosure page explains how the site is funded.
